维罗纳

A glimpse of Verona

Verona has a unique atmosphere: its city center is dotted with many monuments and beautiful palaces, it is home of the Romeo & Juliet, and a World Heritage site. There are dozens of beautiful spots and places to visit, but if you have not much time, you can use half a day to take the most out of it. We suggest, in any case, to buy a Verona card (free entrance for 2 days, 15 euro) and to see the following sites. If you have more time, we recommend a quick visit to the Arche Scaligere (the ruling family’s gothic tombs), Piazza dei Signori with its beautiful palaces and the bridges on the river.

“Cannot miss” in Verona

Piazza Brà is a beautiful, big square created in the 16 century, sided by rich palaces (the massive Gran Guardia and Palazzo Barbieri) and the Arena: a huge Roman amphitheatre in quite good state, considering it was used for combats between gladiators, then brothel, then knight tournaments before becoming an opera theatre in the 19 century and, nowadays, an area for concerts. It can host more than 25,000 people!

Opening hours:

Monday: 13.30 – 19.30

Tuesday-Sunday: 8.30- 19.30

When there is an event in the evening, the ticket office closes at 15.30 and theArena1h later.

The Balcony of Juliet is likely (but not certain) to be the real home of Juliet Cappelletti (Capulet in Shakespeare’s play): it’s a romantic spot for pictures, especially at the brass statue of the unfortunate lady. The place has been restored in the 15 fashion according to an American movie, which was influenced by a painting: a chain of inspiration indeed! The site is very close to the Arena, just walk down the shopping street of Via Mazzini and via Cappello.

Piazza delle erbe is between the other sites. It is the most ancient square, used by the Romans and then decorated during the middle age: worth to mention the fountain, whose main component is a Roman statue, and the column with St. Mark, symbol of Venice. The long, narrow shape with its smooth ground will catch your eye and seduce your camera! The buildings around were the local noblemen palaces, among them the Lamberti Tower deserves a detour as, from the top, you’ll appreciate a genuine view of the city and the river splitting it.
